The Floyd County Technical High School and Georgia Northwestern Technical College hosted the SkillsUSA Region Competition on Friday, February 4, 2011.

SkillsUSA is a national organization serving high school and college students and professional members enrolled in training programs in technical, skilled, and service occupations, including health occupations in high schools and technical colleges.

Students competed in areas including Advertising and Design, Architectural Drafting, Automotive Refinishing Technology, Automotive Service Technology, Cabinet Making, Carpentry, Collision Repair Technology, Cosmetology, Esthetics, Extemporaneous Speaking, First AID/CPR, Graphic Communications, Job Interviews, Job Skill Demonstration, Masonry, Precision Machining Technology, Plumbing, Power Equipment Technology, Prepared Speech, Preschool Teaching Assistant, Residential Wiring, Team Works, Technical Drafting, and Welding. Each area of the competition was judged on a unique set of criteria specific to the topic. The panel of judges consisted of Floyd County Technical High School teachers and Georgia Northwestern Technical College instructors.

“SkillsUSA teaches these students employability skills and how to be leaders in the community,” commented Hillari Knight, graphic art teacher at the Floyd County College and Career Academy.
Winners of the Region 1 competition will go on to compete at the state level.
