Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) Commissioner Ron Jackson announced in December that Murray and Whitfield Counties will become part of the Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) service delivery area.

Jackson informed the state board that oversees the Technical College System of Georgia of his decision during the board’s monthly meeting at the TCSG headquarters in Atlanta.

GNTC will expand its service delivery area into Murray and Whitfield counties beginning with the fall semester 2011.

Effective July 1st, a portion of the Whitfield Career Academy will become the new location for GNTC’s Whitfield Murray County Campus. The college will be leasing approximately 34,000 square feet, wing 500 and 600, for the purpose of offering associate degree, diploma, and certificate programs. The campus is located at 2300 Maddox Chapel Road in Dalton, Georgia.

Dr. Craig McDaniel, GNTC president, chose the Whitfield Career Academy because it was already set up to accommodate the industrial programs that would be taught there. Those program areas include Business Management, Computer Information Systems, Criminal Justice Technology, Industrial Systems Technology, and Technical Specialist. The floor covering industry will be a major focus since several of the industry leaders are promoting and supporting the expansion.

An appreciation and information luncheon will be held on Friday, February 25th, for the Murray and Whitfield county superintendants, assistant superintendants, principals, assistant principals, and school counselors. Those in attendance will be informed on GNTC’s program offerings, admissions and financial aid processes, and dual enrollment opportunities. Speakers at the luncheon will include Dr. Craig McDaniel, president; Jeff King, provost; Dr. Mindy McCannon, vice president of Academic Affairs; Stuart Phillips, vice president of Student Affairs; and Carol Dugger, high school initiatives coordinator.

Last year, GNTC enrolled 9,795 students in its certificate, degree, and diploma programs. An additional 13,588 students took part in the college’s adult education, continuing education, and workforce training programs.

The expansion of GNTC’s service delivery area will have a positive impact on the Dalton and Chatsworth communities.
