Georgia Northwestern Narrowly Misses Crown Upset

(Powell, TN) – After climbing out of an 11-point hole at the break in Powell, Tennessee Thursday night, Georgia Northwestern managed to knot things up with 11 minutes to go at 56-all. However, the four-year program at Crown College would lean on the play of Nate Humphrey and his 26 points to escape the road cats, 88-80.
“We had a lot of hard-fought baskets down low that led to ‘and-one’ situations,” said Georgia Northwestern Men’s Head Basketball Coach David Stephenson. “Problem is we missed nine free throws in the second half. Well, we lost by eight.”

A dazzling half-court bounce pass from Cats captain Matt Woods (Dade) to freshman (Randy Boyd) in the first half were among the plays that helped Georgia Northwestern keep things close on the road. Freshman forward Alex Miller served as a spark plug with 11 points and 13 boards in the effort.

There are two notes to keep in mind as the Bobcats continue their gauntlet of games over the next couple of weeks in preparation for NJCAA Region XVII region play. There were key injuries to freshman point guard Fernando Lemus, Jr. (leg) and Robby Chitwood (finger). Chitwood (Dade) dislocated a finger in the second half during a physical battle for the ball under the boards. Lemus, Jr. (Model) appeared to have a mild leg bruise during a drive to the basket in the final seconds of the game. Both are listed as probable for the Cats next game.

Georgia Northwestern (2-3) will play Saturday at The R.A.C. in Rossville, Georgia in a 1 p.m. tip-off against Caldwell C.C. (N.C.). Monday night, the Bobcats host their Annual Food Drive game benefitting The Care Mission of LaFayette, Georgia. Bring one non-perishable food item and you’ll get free admission to the game versus Covenant College.

December 3, Georgia Northwestern will host their Second Annual Bobcat Blowout. Four high-schools will battle in prep match-ups before and after the Bobcats game with visiting Johnson University (TN). Mountain View Christian plays Cleveland Christian at 2:30 p.m. Tennessee Christian will face-off with Collegedale Academy in the nightcap.
