(Nashville, Tennessee) – A freshman-heavy Lady Cats Volleyball squad which started its 2013 campaign with an 0-5 start has come alive in late September. A sweep of the Welch Invitational Tri-Match in Nashville, Tennessee this past weekend puts Georgia Northwestern at 3-1 over last seven days, 3-6 on the season.
A Covenant (GA) JV squad which swept the Lady Cats 12 days prior saw the roles reversed in Nashville Saturday as Georgia Northwestern topped the Lady Scots three games to one, 25-9, 25-13, 16-25, 25-15.
The host Welch College saw the Lady Cats close the event out with huge numbers dropping the four-year program from Tennessee three games to none, 25-11, 25-7, 25-21.
A pair of GHSA playoff standouts from 2012 led the way for the Lady Cats. Ringgold (GA) alum Victoria Sprouse led the attack with 15 kills and seven aces on the day. North Murray (GA) grad Casey Chapman dropped 13 kill shots and served up 11 aces in the two road wins.
Sophomores Holly Mount and Candice McClain add 13 and six kills, respectively. Mount, the 6-foot-1 middle hitter from Heritage (GA) High School, also added four blocks against the pair of four-year programs.
Up next for Georgia Northwestern (3-6), 11-19 game tally, looks to grow on its first winning streak of the season in Powell, Tennessee tonight as the Lady Cats head to NCCAA power Crown College.
“With all these new players on the court, we knew it would take time to gel,” said Georgia Northwestern Women’s Head Volleyball Coach Carrie Powell. “I’m just glad it has started to come around so quickly. We’re young. We’ll make mistakes. But we are quickly changing things.”
