Georgia Northwestern Preps For Cross-Town Rival Highlands, Freshman Long Questionable

(Gadsden, AL) – All eyes are on freshman center Caroline Long after a battle with Division I Gadsden State (AL) at Beck Field House in Gadsden, Alabama Monday night.

The 6-foot-1 freshman went down with a knee injury in the second half in the Lady Cats 109-41 defeat at the hands of one of the nation’s best Division I JUCO programs. Spirited play in the paint ended with a Lady Cardinal post player’s head and Long’s knee colliding.

After spending several minutes on the hardwood, trainers helped Long to the locker room. “Her status is uncertain right now,” said Georgia Northwestern Women’s Head Basketball Coach Jim Williams. “She may need as much as a week off. We’ll just wait and see.”

Freshman Lady Cat Alisha Bridges (Calhoun, GA) led Division III Georgia Northwestern in scoring with 10 on the night. Sophomore sharpshooter Sierra Smith (Armuchee, GA) added nine points, all by way of the three-point line. Gadsden State (4-0) freshman shooting guard Shauntece Catlin led all scoring with 23 points thanks to 67-percent (10-of-15) shooting from the field.

Georgia Northwestern (1-4) struggled at the hands of the Cardinal defense shooting 29-percent from the field and only 50-percent from the foul line in the loss. “They were a good team,” said Williams. “However, we simply got tired and didn’t play anywhere near our potential. We’ll just go into practice this week and see what they’ve learned and, in turn, what they will show us on the court.”

The Lady Cats will tip things off next against one of its newest rivals in NCJAA Division I Georgia Highlands. Georgia Northwestern and the Lady Chargers will get underway Saturday at 6 p.m. at Charger Gymnasium on the Georgia Highlands College campus in Floyd County, Georgia. Gadsden State next hits the floor on Saturday, as well, when they travel to Selma, Alabama to face Wallace CC – Selma.
