Open House Saturday For Potential 2014-15 Basketball Prospects
(Rome, GA) – “You would’ve thought the President of the United States was walking in,” said Georgia Northwestern Women’s Head Basketball Coach Jim Williams about the welcome the kindergarteners at Rome, Georgia’s Main Elementary gave his squad Friday morning.
It was “Little Bobcats Club” Appreciation Day for Gillian Evans and Lauren Rodin’s Kindergarten classes. Nearly three dozen students were on hand with hand-made signs and lots of cheers to say thank you to the NJCAA women’s basketball program.
“We started the Little Bobcats Club this past fall as a way to show we want to be a true part of our town,” said Williams. “We started holding practices at the gym at Main Elementary. In the process, we got to know some of the administration and faculty at the school. Once we figured out a way we could serve, we just started trying to play a part.”
Coaches and players from the Lady Bobcats have made several visits to the school to help mentor the up-and-coming students. Georgia Northwestern even hosted a “Little Bobcats Day” at a NJCAA home game on January 20 against Prince George’s (MD) College. “We were really impressed,” said Williams. “There was no school in session due to the Martin Luther King holiday that day and there was still a good showing of youngsters and their families. We were honored.”
From classroom visits, to trips to ball games, and even a pizza outing, the Little Bobcats Club has had an eventful first year. “We just wanted to build good solid bonds,” said Williams. “I’ve always wanted our program to do more than play basketball. So, we started spending time with these kids and showed them that there is a big world out there that also cares about them.”
The Lady Bobcats will be back at Main Elementary Saturday at noon for an open house for potential 2014-15 Lady Bobcat Basketball recruits. All are welcome to attend the open house and meet Coach Williams, as well as the coaching staff and players from Georgia Northwestern Technical College.
