National Professional Skills Contest To Be Held In Late June

(Atlanta, GA) – Nine Georgia Northwestern Technical College students will be competing on the national stage in June after a huge showing at the statewide Phi Beta Lambda competition in Atlanta, Georgia’s Westin Atlanta North last week.

Phi Beta Lambda is a professional skills organization in which college students can join to learn more about their areas of professional interest and/or areas of study. Among the various colleges competing at the state-level were the University of Georgia, Reinhardt University, and Dalton State College.

Taking home top honors in Georgia’s state competition were Jonathon Hammond (Help Desk), Whitfield Murray Campus; Marcos Diaz (Statistical Analysis), Whitfield Murray Campus; and Cynthia Mills and Daniel Heian (Small Business Management Plan), Floyd County Campus. All will represent Georgia Northwestern at the National Phi Beta Lambda competition in Nashville, Tennessee on June 24-27 at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center.

Also qualifying for the national competition are Sadiron Patton (Floyd County Campus), Kenneth Shuman (Floyd County Campus), Marcella Hooper (Whitfield Murray Campus), Tina Zhang (Whitfield Murray Campus), and Mario Trejo (Whitfield Murray Campus).

In the college’s last showing on the national stage in 2013, Georgia Northwestern students Daniel Groce and Candace Suits from the Whitfield Murray Campus took home seventh place nationally in the Business Ethics category. Georgia Northwestern has qualified students for the national competition every year since 2003. Phi Beta Lambda advisors for Georgia Northwestern are Patty Hart, Dione Hodge, and Mark Upton.

Approximately 16,000 people benefit from GNTC’s credit and noncredit programs, making it the largest college in Northwest Georgia and the fifth largest technical college in Georgia.
